About POLAHS

The Port of Los Angeles High School (POLAHS) is an independent, college preparatory charter high school located in San Pedro. The 950 students currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12 attend our school tuition-free.

POLAHS administration, faculty, and our Board of Trustees are driven by a mission stating that all students will graduate from high school, will be prepared and motivated for college, and will be introduced to coursework and career opportunities in International Business and Maritime Studies.

Central to achieving our mission is the flexibility to individualize instruction and the learning environment in order to ensure that all students reach their full potential. We provide the tools necessary for each student to realize their talents and goals without limitation.

History

Over 10 years ago, a small group of community members recognized the need for a new local high school. These visionaries planned to open a school that would educate underserved students in a small, innovative learning environment. In September of 2005, POLAHS opened with 112 freshmen students and four teachers. Because the school's classrooms were not yet completed, classes were held along the sandy beaches of the Cabrillo Beach Boys Scout Camp site. Parents from over 10 communities were eager for great educational opportunities, and entrusted a new administration with their children. This incredible responsibility, paired with a challenging beginning, created a foundation for the resilient school ethos that underlies our great success today.

Students and teachers moved into our current school building in January of 2006. School uniforms, immaculate hallways, and a business-like setting all contribute to the professionalism and excitement is palpable on our campus.

We invite you to come to POLAHS and visit with our friendly teachers, administration, and students. They give our school life, and they are the reason we are here. We want you to be a part of it!
