Society of Port Engineers Scholarship

San Pedro- Port of Los Angeles High School's (POLAHS) first senior class will graduate this June in the Warner Grand Theatre. These pioneers are ready to advance their education at colleges and universities throughout California and the nation. Undoubtedly, many of them will return to work in the San Pedro community and for the Port of Los Angeles.

The Society of Port Engineers, Los Angeles/Long Beach is a professional organization whose objective is to maintain an open forum for the discussion of issues affecting the maritime industry and to provide scholarships to California Maritime Academy cadets. At their most recent gathering, held at Ports O' Call Restaurant in San Pedro, the Los Angeles/Long Beach chapter announced their generous contribution of $12,000 to the California Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), earmarked for any Port of Los Angeles High School student declaring an engineering major while at the university.

Three POLAHS graduates have been accepted to Cal Maritime in Vallejo, California. POLAHS expects that at least two of the students will accept this invitation. Funding will certainly be a large factor in their decision. Cal Maritime is a specialized campus of The California State University offering students bachelors degrees in international business and logistics, facilities engineering technology, global studies and maritime affairs, marine engineering technology, marine transportation, and mechanical engineering. Cal Maritime is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States, and the only one on the West Coast.

The Port of Los Angeles High School (http://www.polahs.net) is a not-for-profit, tuition-free charter high school open to all residents of California. Since 2005, POLAHS has fused a college preparatory program with electives in International Business and Maritime Studies.
