Arbor Day at Port of Los Angeles High School

Gentle footprints today will ensure a path for the students of tomorrow.

On Friday, April 25, 2008, POLAHS students celebrated Arbor Day with the help of Ponte Vista, a residential and senior living development in San Pedro. Ponte Vista donated twelve Queen Palm trees to the campus community in an effort to help beautify the area around the new Port Police Headquarters.

Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. National Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the last Friday in April. This year, POLAHS students commemorated Arbor Day by aiding in the planting of trees surrounding their campus. Cheerleaders performed while green, reusable grocery bags were distributed.

With a focus on the environment coinciding with academics, POLAHS students were reminded that planting trees helps reduce their global footprint. As trees grow, they help stop global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and the soil, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. The Queen Palm trees will provide cooling shade for the students, block cold winter winds, attract birds and wildlife, purify the air and add grace and beauty to the community.
