16th Annual California Charter Schools Conference

On Wednesday, March 11th, an unparalleled forty faculty members from Port of Los Angeles High School will attend the 16th annual California Charter Schools Conference. More than 2,000 are expected to attend at the Convention Center. Teachers and administration will bring the most contemporary charter practices in California back to the classrooms of POLAHS.

The conference program is divided into five sections, including student achievement, charter school operations, advocating the charter movement, independent study and development. POLAHS teachers will attend breakout sessions dedicated to developing new teaching strategies, project-based learning and effective classroom management. POLAHS administrators will focus on strategic planning, fulfilling the school's mission and retaining quality teachers. POLAHS Board of Trustees members will share best practices for governance, leadership and fund raising.

This year's conference theme will be "Quality Charter Schools Strengthen Communities." James Cross, POLAHS Executive Director notes, "This theme is fitting, as the success of our school has greatly benefited the San Pedro community. Our teachers are dedicated to graduating students from high school while preparing them for college. These top-notch students are the future workforce for the Port of Los Angeles and beyond." Parents and San Pedro leaders alike have praised the school as well. Charter school parents attribute challenging curriculum and individualized student attention to their high level of satisfaction, according to a 2007 University of Southern California (USC) field study.

Conference attendees from POLAHS will uphold this extraordinary level of success by continuing to strengthen best school practices and operations.
