The Port of Los Angeles High School is excited to announce that Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen A. Trutanich will deliver the keynote address at this year's graduation ceremony to be held in the historic Warner Grand Theatre on Wednesday, June 23rd at 2 pm. Councilwoman Janice Hahn, a longtime advocate of San Pedro's newest public high school will also address the students and their parents.
Carmen A. Trutanich was elected City Attorney of Los Angeles on May 19, 2009. Carmen, who was born and raised in San Pedro, attended local schools and earned both his undergraduate degree and MBA at the University of Southern California. After working alongside his father at the StarKist Tuna Cannery on Terminal Island and teaching at local community colleges, Carmen decided to pursue a law degree. He graduated, passed the bar and opened a practice here in San Pedro. His desire to serve the public soon led him to become a Deputy District Attorney where he established a reputation as a "tough Prosecutor" in the special gang unit and as an aggressive environmental advocate. Mr. Trutanich also holds a life time teaching credential.
A former teacher and life-long advocate for working families, Janice Hahn was elected to the Los Angeles Charter Reform Commission in 1997 and became Councilwoman representing the 15th council district in 2001. Janice has been an unrelenting and vocal supporter of POLAHS from day one. She has played an important role in helping to establish the first new public high School in San Pedro in 100 years, as well as ensuring its continued growth and success.
POLAHS is approaching the end of another historic school year and for the second year in a row will graduate 100% of its senior class. The exceptional students of POLAHS Class of 2010 are well prepared and motivated to further their education by attending schools such as the California Maritime Academy, Embry-Riddle University, UC Berkeley and other colleges and universities across the country.
The POLAHS 2010 Commencement will be held at the Warner Grand Theatre on June 23rd, 2010 at 2 pm. The community is invited to help celebrate at the post graduation festivities on the street in front of the Theatre.
The Port of Los Angeles High School (POLAHS) is a not-for-profit, tuition-free charter high school open to all residents of California. Since 2005, POLAHS has fused a college preparatory program with electives in International Business and Maritime Studies.
