multiplying fractions when multiplying fractions the rule of thumb is to multiply straight across that means from left to right so you would multiply your numerator Tundra numerator and then put it over your denominator Tundra denominator for example 3/5 * 1/3 using this generalized rule of thumb we would multiply 3 * 1 and get three / 5 x 3 which will give us 15 this is the multiplication of fractions but it is not in simplest form which makes it not fully done if we look at this we noticed that three and 15 are both divisible by 3 therefore if I take 3 and say / 3 I will get one and if I get 15 / 3 that will give me five believe me the fraction of 1/5 that would be your complete answer another word for doing this would be to start canceling or reducing from the very beginning this will have you multiply and smaller numbers and will answer the simplest form a little easier for example again if we have 3/5 * 1/3 I would have that three divided by 3 is 1 + 3 divided by 3 is 1 then I would multiply straight across with One X one being one and five times one being five there for my answer would already be done and simplest form as 1/5 let's try another example of this we have two over five x 5 / 10 if we look at the numerator and the denominator are there any words that go into any numbers on both the numerator and the denominator most people can look at that since automatically say will 5 goes into 5 of those can cancel out and that is the truth 5 divided by 5 is 1 and 5 divided by 5 we also have a 2 and a 10 well 2 does go into 10 so if we divide both the top and bottom by 2 we will get one on the top and a v on the bottom leaving us with multiplying straight across one on the top and V on the bottom so 1/5 would be our answer again another sample of this would be if we have 1/2 * 4/10 1/2 * 4/10 looking at this are there any numbers on the top reduce with numbers on the bottom easiest want to look at would be that 2 goes into 4 that means both 2 and 4 are divisible by 2 so 2 / 2 is 1 and 4 divided is 2 with what we are left with we have two over ten that can be reduced by 2 2 2 / 2 is 1 and 10 divided by 2 is 5 I'm leaving us an answer with 1/5 after multiplying straight across and that is how you multiply fractions
